A Historic Dawn in Florida
On Wednesday, NASA launched its first crewed lunar mission in more than half a century. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, towering 32 stories, lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying four astronauts aboard the Orion capsule. Tens of thousands of spectators gathered at the launch site and along nearby roads and beaches—a scene reminiscent of the Apollo moonshots of the 1960s and 1970s.
The crew consists of Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. It is the most diverse lunar team ever assembled, including the first woman, the first person of color, and the first non‑U.S. citizen to fly on a NASA moon mission.
“NASA is back in the business of sending astronauts to the moon,” agency administrator Jared Isaacman told reporters after liftoff, describing the long gap since Apollo as a brief intermission.
A Tense Countdown
Hours before launch, engineers faced several last‑minute technical challenges. During earlier ground tests, dangerous hydrogen leaks had forced lengthy delays. This time, the fueling operation—loading over 700,000 gallons (2.6 million liters) of propellant—proceeded without significant leakage, to NASA’s relief. However, faulty battery sensors and a communication glitch with the rocket’s flight termination system briefly threatened to halt the countdown. Both issues were quickly resolved, clearing the way for liftoff.
The 10‑Day Test Flight
The mission is scheduled to last 10 days. For the first 25 hours, the astronauts will remain relatively close to Earth, conducting systems checks in orbit. They will then fire the main engine to begin their journey toward the moon.
Unlike Apollo 8, whose crew orbited the moon and read from Genesis on Christmas Eve 1968, Artemis II will not enter lunar orbit. Instead, the Orion capsule will fly past the moon and continue another 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) beyond—making the crew the farthest humans from Earth ever—before looping back for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
During the early phase of the mission, the astronauts practiced manual control of the capsule, maneuvering as close as 33 feet (10 meters) to the detached upper stage of the rocket. NASA wants to ensure that Orion can be piloted manually if its automated system fails.
Scientific and Visual Highlights
During the lunar flyby, the moon will appear roughly the size of a basketball held at arm’s length. The crew will take turns photographing the lunar surface through Orion’s windows. Under favorable lighting, they may see features never before observed by human eyes. They will also witness a partial total solar eclipse from space, using eclipse glasses as the moon briefly blocks the sun, revealing the solar corona.
Technical Risks and a Troubled Toilet
Artemis II is the first crewed test of Orion’s life‑support systems, including a water dispenser and a toilet—none of which flew on the uncrewed Artemis I mission three years ago. Already, the toilet has malfunctioned. After Koch activated it, the system shut down within seconds. Mission Control instructed her to use a handheld contingency urinal while engineers diagnose the problem.
NASA has not released its formal risk assessment for the mission, though managers say the odds of success are better than 50‑50—the typical benchmark for a new rocket. The SLS vehicle previously suffered flammable hydrogen leaks during ground tests, an issue engineers still do not fully understand. Similar leaks and unrelated helium blockages delayed Artemis I, which also returned with excessive heat shield damage. Fortunately, Wednesday’s countdown was leak‑free.
From Apollo to Artemis: A New Era
With more than half of the world’s population born after the last Apollo moonwalk, NASA sees Artemis as a fresh beginning. “There are generations who weren’t alive when Apollo launched,” said Nicky Fox, NASA’s science mission chief. “This is their Apollo.”
Unlike the Apollo program, which was driven by a Cold War race against the Soviet Union, Artemis aims to establish a sustainable lunar presence—including a base supported by robotic rovers and drones. However, Administrator Isaacman and the Trump administration have made clear that the next boot prints on the moon must be American, not Chinese.
Under a recent program reshuffling, Artemis III—originally planned for no earlier than 2029—has been moved to 2027, allowing astronauts to practice docking Orion with a lunar lander in Earth orbit. The actual moon landing near the lunar south pole has been shifted to Artemis IV in 2028, two years before a projected Chinese crewed arrival.
A Free‑Return Trajectory and Inherent Dangers
Like Apollo 13—the only moon mission that failed to land—Artemis II will use a free‑return lunar flyby trajectory. Gravity from both the moon and Earth will provide most of the propulsion needed to keep Orion on its figure‑eight course, minimizing fuel consumption.
Despite the excitement, dangers remain. Charlie Duke, one of only four surviving Apollo moonwalkers, offered encouragement: “I’m cheering you on.” He noted that beating the Soviet Union to the moon made high risks acceptable in the Apollo era.
Astronaut Christina Koch stressed that the moon serves as a proving ground for future Mars missions. “It is our strong hope that this mission is the start of an era where everyone on Earth can look at the moon and think of it as also a destination,” she said.
Victor Glover added: “It’s the story of humanity. Not Black history, not women’s history, but that it becomes human history.”
